Fallout: TV Series

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)

Before going into further detail in this review, I should say that I’ve never completed a Fallout game in its entirety. I tried multiple times to get into them, but I usually ended up finding something else to play instead. So when I first tried to watch this TV show, I was a bit apprehensive. How much would I enjoy it? How much would I actually understand without fully playing the games?

It came as a surprise that I really started to enjoy the show, and it quickly became one of my go-to series whenever a new episode came out.

If I had to say what kept my interest in the show, a few things come to mind. First, it didn’t really require much prior knowledge of the games, if any at all. Even though I still haven’t played them to this day, I can imagine that playing them might enrich the experience. I’m not entirely sure, but it seems likely.

Continuing with what kept me glued to the show, the casting absolutely nailed it. The script is fairly good overall, although there are some comic relief moments that feel idiotic and break the seriousness of the show’s best scenes. Still, the casting is one of the strongest aspects. Every actor and actress plays their part extremely well, and sometimes it even feels like the role was written specifically for them, though I doubt that’s actually the case.

In particular, the characters Lucy, Maximus, and the Ghoul, among many others, are portrayed very well by their respective actors. Maximus ends up being one of the most interesting characters for me. The way we see him develop throughout the two seasons is amazing, and the actor does a great job with it.

I’ve already outlined some of the best and worst aspects of the show, but one thing I thought was particularly bad was the Legion element. I didn’t really understand the appeal or why they added something that ridiculous to the plot. Still, among so many great things, I was able to overlook that questionable idea, along with the weak acting by Macaulay Culkin. I’m sorry to say it, since Home Alone is one of my favorite Christmas movies, but this was either a bad performance or he’s seriously out of practice. I feel bad saying that because he seems like he’d be nice to hang out with, but the performance just didn’t work.

To close this review, I want to give a shoutout to the prosthetics team on the show. Everything and everyone looks great. Amazing work there. The special effects are also pretty solid.

At the time of writing, only two seasons have been released, so I don’t know what to expect going forward. But if it maintains this level of quality, I’ll keep watching.
